Allardyce: I was “entrapped” while trying to help a long-time friend

Former England manager Sam Allardyce has expressed his disappointment at losing his dream job this week, declaring that “entrapment has won”.

The 61-year-old was announced as England manager back in July, after an awful Euro 2016 under the stewardship of Roy Hodgson.

However, Allardyce left his post as England manager on Tuesday night, just 67 days after being appointed by the FA.

It came after the former Blackburn Rovers was filmed by undercover reporters – posing as business men from a Far-East firm – allegedly offering advice on how to get around transfer regulations set by the FA.

Speaking outside his Bolton home ahead of a holiday with his family on Wednesday, Allardyce told reporters he went to the meeting concerned with the intentions of helping a close friend.

“On reflection it was a silly thing to do but I helped out someone I have known for 30 years. It was an error in judgement and I paid the consequences,” Allardyce told reporters. “Entrapment has won on this occasion, I have to accept that.

“The agreement was done very amicably with the FA. I apologise to those all concerned after the situation I put myself in. I have a confidentiality agreement, but I took the time to talk to you guys. I’m off abroad now. I would like to wish all the England players good luck.

When asked whether he would return to management, Allardyce added: “Who knows, we’ll see.”

It is claimed that friend was Scott McGarvey, after Allardyce told Sky Sports News earlier on Wednesday that he was simply helping his close associate as he had a job offer on the line.
