Allardyce set to be confirmed as England manager

Sam Allardyce will be confirmed as the new England manager in the next few days, according to reports.

The Sunderland boss was interviewed for the role alongside fellow Englishman Steve Bruce this week, with Hull requesting the FA make a decision as soon as possible in order to avoid disruption to their pre-season plans.

And the panel of selectors, which is made up of chief executive Martin Glenn, vice-chairman David Gill and technical director Dan Ashworth, have chosen Allardyce as the man to succeed Roy Hodgson, according to the Standard.

Former England stars Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard were consulted in the process, along with former Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham boss Harry Redknapp.

USA manager Jurgen Klinsmann was also a candidate for the job, according to the report, but the FA’s preferred choice was to elect an Englishman.

Allardyce’s first game in charge could be a friendly against the Czech Republic on September 1, although England’s opposition is yet to be confirmed, while the Three Lions’ first World Cup qualifier will be against Slovakia three days later.

Sunderland are now, according to the Standard, in advanced talks with David Moyes to replace the void left by Allardyce, who steered them away from relegation last season.

The Black Cats immediately entered into conversations with Moyes once they became aware of the FA’s interest in Allardyce.
