Alonso admits F1 return unlikely

Fernando Alonso says the chances of him returning to Formula One are remote due to a lack of available drives and his age. The two-time world champion left the sport at the end of 2018 after enduring four difficult years with McLaren. While he achieved some fairly impressive results with the Woking-based team, the car was never competitive enough to be at the top end of the grid. The Spaniard duly announced his retirement at the end of last season and has been racing in the American IndyCar series. Alonso also competed in the 2019 Le Man 24 Hours, where he won with Toyota. The 38-year-old has been rumoured with a return to the sport ever since he quit and has never fully shut down the speculation. However, he admits that while it is not impossible, it is unlikely he will race in F1 again. “It’s not impossible, but it’s getting harder and harder with my age,” Alonso said. “Now I could go back and enjoy it, which was impossible in my last years in the championship. “Nothing has changed. I said goodbye in Abu Dhabi in 2018. After all those years I had to take a deep breath and clear my head. The years before that were difficult.”
