Bayern Munich‘s Xabi Alonso is reportedly set to retire from football at the end of the season when his contract with the German side expires.
According to SportBild, Alonso met with the Bayern Munich hierarchy prior to the winter break to inform them of his decision to quit the sport at the end of the campaign.
The report indicates that the Spanish midfielder said he had no intention of playing after the summer, when his contract with Bayern Munich is scheduled to come to an end.
Bayern are said to have accepted the 35-year-old’s decision but have also informed Alonso that they will leave the door open for him to change his mind between now and the end of June.
But it won’t spell the end of Alonso’s association with the Bavarians, who have offered him a place on the club’s board of directors if he does indeed stop playing before the new campaign with manager Carlo Ancelotti a huge fan of the player’s footballing intelligence, having also worked with him at Real Madrid.
Bayern announced earlier this week that they had secured the signing of Sebastian Rudy from Hoffenheim for the start of next season, which may have been made in anticipation of Alonso no longer being available.
The former Liverpool midfielder has featured in 14 league matches this season for Bayern, scoring three times.
