Bayer Leverkusen manager, Xabi Alonso has claimed that the reason he stayed put at the club instead of seeking opportunities elsewhere is because he is focused on what he is accomplishing in Germany.
With the German team, the Spaniard has performed incredibly well, winning the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal this season in addition to reaching the UEFA Europa League final.
It is the club’s first Bundesliga title and only their second DFB-Pokal. The team’s only loss of the season came against Atalanta in the Europa League final.
It should come as no surprise that Alonso has become sought after, as two of the teams he previously played for, Bayern Munich and Liverpool, are in search of a new manager.
The 42-year-old chose to stay with Leverkusen and build on his outstanding start to management there. This is despite the fact that it seemed highly unlikely that he would decline the opportunity to manage in either Merseyside or Bavaria.
When asked if he thought about succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Anfield. Alonso told CNN as cited by The Metro: “All these decisions, they need to be thorough. You need to really think about them. And it was more about what I had, not what I’m missing.

“For sure, my bond with Liverpool is there and it’s still there. So there’s no, any kind of issue with that.’
The Leverkusen boss was pushed on whether he had held talks with Liverpool, but kept his cards close to his chest, saying: “That’s kind of behind the curtains.”
