Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez won a world title in a fourth weight division after he beat Sergey Kovalev to win the WBO light-heavyweight belt. The 29-year-old stepped up two weight divisions to do battle with the Russian, and he won via a devastating knockout in the 11th round. Kovalev started well and used his height and reach advantage but Alvarez’s quick feet and hands started to bring him into the contest. After 10 close rounds, Alvarez unleashed a powerful combination before Kovalev fell onto the ropes and the referee stopped the bout in the 11th. A third fight against Gennady Golovkin has already been mentioned, but Alvarez says he will bide his time before deciding his next opponent. “The plan was patience to have patience,” Alvarez said. “We knew it would take time for me to get to him. I am new at this division, but overall it was successful. “This is just one step in my history. Be patient because Canelo will make history. It’s a guarantee. “We have to see what happens. We have to see what’s best for us and look for the best fights.”
