Alvaro Morata and Antoine Griezmann Remain The Greatest Duo In Europe

On Monday night, Atletico Madrid defeated Granada 1-0 on the road to record their first victory of the season. Once again, they had their front two to thank when Alvaro Morata’s header from Antoine Griezmann’s cross found their heads, establishing another connection between them.

This season, Morata and Griezmann are the greatest strike partnership in Europe. They have scored nearly two thirds of Atletico’s total goals—37 of their 67 goals and 23 of their 40 La Liga goals—between them.

Diario AS reports that the closest rivals are Harry Kane and Leroy Sane of Bayern Munich (35), Kylian Mbappe and Randal Kolo Muani of Paris Saint-Germain (35), Viktor Gyokeres and Paulinho of Sporting CP (25), and Lautaro Martinez and Hakan Calhanoglu of Inter (32) who complete the top 5. Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo Goes of Real Madrid are the closest in Spain, but they are still far behind with 30 goals.

Griezmann and Morata are both just one goal shy of 20 goals apiece, making it the first time Los Rojiblancos have had two players reach that milestone since 2015.

On the one hand, it shows how effective their collaboration is, but Diego Simeone might be cautious about depending too much on them. Nevertheless, as those other collaborations demonstrate, it is typical for the best teams in Europe to mainly rely on one or two forwards to score goals.
