Ancelotti Breaks Silence As Prosecutor Requests Jail Term For Real Madrid Coach

Carlo Ancelotti insists he was ‘not resident’ in Spain in 2015 and has already paid a fine: ‘I am convinced I am innocent.’

The Madrid prosecutor requested four-year and nine-month jail terms for the Italian tactician on Wednesday due to tax fraud.

Ancelotti spoke about the matter for the first time last night after a 1-1 Champions League draw against RB Leipzig, which allowed Real Madrid to qualify for the quarter-finals.

“The tax authority says that I was a resident at the time and I don’t think that I was a resident,” Ancelotti told reporters after the game, as quoted by AP.

In His Words?

“I already paid the fine, the money is with them, and now the lawyers are talking to try to find a solution. I’m convinced that I’m innocent, that I was not a resident in 2015, and they think that I was a resident. Let’s see what the judge says.”

However, reports claim Ancelotti’s alleged tax evasion refers to 2013 and 2014, during the Italian’s first two years in charge of Real Madrid. The La Liga giants have not released an official statement about the matter.

This is Ancelotti’s second spell in Madrid. He first moved to the Spanish capital in 2013 and remained at the club until 2015. He returned in 2021 and has recently signed a contract extension at the Bernabeu until June 2026.

Ancelotti has won the Champions League four times as a coach, more than any other tactician, and is the only manager to have won the domestic title in each of the top five European leagues.
