Andre Gomes has revealed that Portuguese team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo has congratulated him on his move to Barcelona and is now raring to play alongside Lionel Messi.
The midfielder was presented to the Barcelona fans on Wednesday, after joining from Valencia for £46m, capping a memorable summer in which he helped Portugal to win Euro 2016.
Having the privilege of playing alongside Ronaldo for his country and now Messi at club level, Gomes said he was looking forward to getting started with the La Liga champions.
I spoke with Cristiano Ronaldo,’ Gomes told TV3. ‘He congratulated me and the truth is he was happy for me, but now I will remain a rival of Cristiano, as I was before [at Valencia]. On the pitch there is no friendship.
‘I have time with the national team to be with him, and enjoy being with him. For the moment, what I want most is to enjoy playing with Messi.’
Midfield options at the Nou Camp are lengthy and include the likes of Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic, Rafinha, Sergi Roberto, Denis Suarez, Sergi Samper and Arda Turan, meaning Gomes will have to battle for a central spot in manager Luis Enrique’s preferred 4-3-3 formation.
Following his participation in France this summer, Gomes will join up with his new side on August 8.
