He was ultimately one of many players who departed the Dutch team, but he may have been playing for one of United’s opponents in the Premier League if circumstances had been different.
Onana was a member of the squad that advanced to the Champions League final four in 2019 under the direction of Erik ten Hag.
Following their achievements, players like Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt moved on, and Onana was being pursued by some of Europe’s top clubs, reports Mirror.
When Le Media Carre asked him to list the teams he had considered joining while at Ajax, he replied, “I had Monaco, I had Nice, I had Atletico de Madrid, I had Chelsea, Arsenal.”
When asked who from Ajax he was most interested in joining, Onana said, “Lyon. In any case, it was advanced when I spoke with the president and the technical director. Because I chose to learn Italian, it was challenging for me to communicate with the president.”
