Angel Gomes’ Decision To Quit Manchester United Has Been Validated As He Is Awarded First England Call-Up By Lee Carsley

Angel Gomes, England’s new midfield hope, believes his decision to leave Manchester United as a youngster has been vindicated by his call-up to Lee Carsley’s first team.

The 24-year-old has established himself in France with Lille and has been included to the England squad for the first time by interim coach Carsley for the upcoming Nations League games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

Gomes, who left United at the age of 19, explained last night: ‘When I left, it was to develop myself as a player and person, and I believed I could eventually construct a road to be in this position.

‘But it was difficult to leave the club I’d been at since the age of six and venture into the unknown.

‘The hardest part was leaving England and going on loan to Portugal. I had a concept in mind, but I had no idea how it would turn out—going to France, learning a new language, adjusting to a new culture, and playing football. Reported By daily news.

‘It was a challenging period for me, but I knew that if I stayed with it, I would eventually achieve where I wanted to go.

‘Since then, it has been an uphill trajectory, albeit with many challenges and terrible periods. “Being in this position now makes everything worthwhile.”

Gomes is one of four new faces in Carsley’s side, and he believes his forward-thinking style will complement the new aggressive mentality promised by his former England under-21 coach.

In His Words?

‘I think I’m brave,’ he said.

‘I appreciate taking risks. and enjoy assisting the team in all phases of the game, whether it is to play out, control the game, or achieve the highest potential score.

‘It is something I feel comfortable with. That element of my game can now be revealed.

Gomes, whose godfather is former United winger Nani, qualifies to play for Portugal through his father, although that option has not been pursued beyond brief discussions between his parents and the Portuguese FA.

English clubs have also made occasional attempts to get him back to the nation of his birth.

‘I have had some, but I think that everything will unfold naturally and at its own pace,’ Gomes stated.

‘I am quite relaxed, so if something comes up that makes sense, you never know in football.’
