When Liverpool opted to sign Arne Slot as Jurgen Klopp’s successor, they considered the Dutchman’s comparable style of play to the retiring Reds manager.
Slot addressed this reality directly in his first interview with the club last week, after formally taking over as Liverpool’s new head coach at the beginning of the month.

“I think there are and I think that is also one of the reasons why I came in,” he told me. “Because I think the way Liverpool’scouted’ me, they were looking for, not the exact same type, but I think when something is successful [with] a specific way of playing, you want to prolong or continue with it. This is most likely one of the reasons they contacted me as well.
“Yeah, it is my style but I think it is the style of many modern coaches at the moment: we were all a bit inspired because of the rivalry between City and Liverpool.
“We were all inspired by Guardiola and Klopp and I think at a big club, which I worked in in Feyenoord as well, it is probably the only style you can play – to have the ball a lot, to have a lot of energy, and I think also now there are comparisons between the club I left behind and the club I am going to work for now.”
However, Slot’s track record of developing and enhancing players was also important to Liverpool’s decision. This inevitably implies a willingness to use a club’s young talent.
