Arsenal and Chelsea both sent scouts to Portugal on Tuesday night to observe Viktor Gyokeres open the scoring in Sporting Lisbon’s 2-0 Champions League win over Lille.
The Swedish international may have been off target with a couple of early chances, but last season’s Primeira Liga leaders dominated from the start against their French opponents. But it always seemed like a matter of time before one of Viktor Gyokeres’ shots made its way into Lucas Chevalier’s goal.
And, with 38 minutes on the clock, the former Coventry City and Swansea striker swiveled on a sixpence and fired into the bottom corner.
With scouts from Premier League giants Arsenal and Chelsea in attendance at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, Gyokeres extended his impressive run by scoring on his first appearance in Europe’s top club competition.

According to HITC, London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea will prioritize a centre-forward on their transfer wishlists in 2025.
Arsenal and Chelsea are keeping an eye on Viktor Gyokeres
Arsenal, despite the best efforts of an ever-improving Kai Havertz, is still without a top-tier number nine. Gunners star Paul Merson feels a vulnerability may lose his former club the Premier League title for the third year in a row.
“Arsenal might be short of a centre forward,” Merson said Sky Sports last week, with Mikel Arteta’s runners-up signing only a midfielder in all-action Mikel Merino and £33 million defender Riccardo Calafiori.
“I’m not sure they did enough in the transfer window.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea continues to rely on the ever-inconsistent Nicolas Jackson to score goals.
Enzo Maresca’s side did consider summer moves for Alexander Isak and Jhon Duran, but one for Samu Omorodion fell through at the last minute.
The prolific Gyokeres, whose agent disclosed Premier League interest a few months ago, now appears to be one of the top contenders on Chelsea’s radar.
HITC can confirm that Chelsea and Arsenal place a high value on the former Brighton and Hove Albion prospect.
Gyokeres was a standout attacking talent in the Championship during his tenure at Coventry. After facing him at Sunderland, former Black Cats manager Tony Mowbray compared his emphatic finishing and ferocious running force to Erling Haaland’s.
