Although Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta already has a lot of respect for Real Sociedad player Martin Zubimendi, he could take heed of what Kieran Tierney, a member of the team, said.
While still a member of Arsenal’s roster, Scotland’s top player Tierney is now on loan to Real Sociedad in La Liga. The former Celtic player is hopeful that some time in San Sebastian can jumpstart his career, since he spent a significant amount of his time at the Emirates dealing with fitness difficulties.
Tierney has had the opportunity to get a close-up look at Zubimendi, a player who has been heavily linked to Arsenal over the last two transfer windows, during this time with Sociedad. The 25-year-old Spanish international’s technical skill has drawn Arteta’s attention.
As an Arsenal fan, Tierney’s remarks about his teammates at Sociedad are worth reading. In a recent interview with the Guardian, the left-back explicitly mentioned Zubimendi as one of the players deserving of recognition.
The Scotsman explained: ” You have world-class players like Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino, Brais Mendez. It’s not that people don’t think they’re good, it’s just that if you’re only watching the Premier League every week, it’s hard to know. They’re world class.”
Despite spending £105million on a new midfielder last summer in Declan Rice, it seems as if Arteta’s midfield overhaul is still not yet complete. Zubimendi has been identified as someone who could replace Thomas Partey, if the constantly-crocked Ghanaian is sold in the summer.
It has been widely reported that Zubimendi’s release clause sits at a relatively modest sum of £51m. I
