Arsenal have reportedly opened discussions over a new contract with Granit Xhaka, with the midfielder keen to extend his stay at the club.
The Switzerland international is now in his eighth season at Emirates Stadium, which seemed implausible given his inconsistency in previous seasons.
However, that might be attributed to playing in positions that did not suit him, with current head coach Mikel Arteta instigating an unexpected resurgence in the 30-year-old.
Xhaka has scored three goals and provided five assists in 23 Premier League appearances this season, helping the club to the top of the table.
Although injuries to the former and Mohamed Elneny have resulted in the North London club being linked with another signing for the middle of the pitch, a good bond has been developed with Thomas Partey and Martin Odegaard.
Nevertheless, club management have been in a position where negotiating a renewal with Xhaka has had to be at the top of their priority list.
The former Borussia Monchengladbach player is under contract through 2024, with a 12-month extension option, although his status has only improved since his last extension in August 2021.
According to 90 min, the relevant parties have held discussions about a new contract.

According to the report, Xhaka is eager to sign another deal with the North Londoners, one that would bind him to the club for more than a decade.
Arteta is also in favor of Xhaka staying at Arsenal at a time when they are getting closer to returning to the Champions League.
Xhaka is expected to start Arsenal’s match against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
