Arsenal have reportedly identified former Atletico Madrid director Andrea Berta as the top candidate to succeed Edu Gaspar as the club’s sporting director.
After turning down a lucrative new contract to prolong his stay at Arsenal, the Brazilian was expected to depart the north London club in November, according to a report from Daily Mail.
Before being promoted to sporting director, Edu was hired as the club’s first technical director in 2019. He and manager Mikel Arteta had played a key role in transforming the team into a title contender for several seasons.
Upon the confirmation of his unexpected departure, it was announced that the director will link up with Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis to work with his group of clubs, which includes Greek giants Olympiacos.

Following the commencement of the former Gunners midfielder’s gardening leave, Arsenal promoted Edu’s No. 2 Jason Ayto to interim director, but it was believed that they were examining many people to fill the position permanently.
Tomas Rosicky, a former Arsenal star who currently occupies the same position for Sparta Prague, was reportedly one of the candidates being considered.
Fabrizio Romano claims that Berta’s candidacy has impressed the Arsenal management. And the Italian is presently in advanced negotiations with the team, even though he hasn’t signed a contract yet.
Given that Berta joined the La Liga team in 2017, Gunners supporters can probably feel encouraged by his successful time at Atletico.
Antoine Griezmann, Rodri, and Jan Oblak were among the many elite players whom Berta helped recruit to the Spanish capital.
