Arsenal legend Ian Wright was Tuesday evening embroiled in a Twitter war with the club’s fan who unfurled the banner asking manager Arsene Wenger to leave during the FA Cup replay at Hull City.
The banner reading ‘Arsene, thanks for the memories but it’s time to say goodbye’ was unfurled at full-time as a growing number of supporters call for Wenger’s 20-year tenure to end.
The former Gunners hitman backed the manager in a series of tweets confronting fans claiming to be among those who had displayed the banner.
One supporter told Wright: ‘maybe you should respect the fans who have a voice an want change, I held it up, why don’t you say it to me mate.’
Wright responded: ‘I’ll disrespect you all day long unfurling your muggy banner after a 4-0 win and plenty enough games left in the league.’
The fan, @DeejayDT, replied: ‘f*** off Wrighty, you don’t pay the money we do, you don’t put up with what we do, p***k!’
The 52-year-old pundit referenced his career in north London, adding in a retort: ‘I’ve paid with my fused ankle! 6 injections in a week to play 94 FA cup! Will limp forever! And I’d do it again.’
Wenger typically shrugged the insulting gesture off, although he would no doubt be grateful to have Wright in his corner.
‘There’s nothing disappointing for me,’ Wenger said. ‘I do my job. Look at the history of the club, since the club exists, and you will see that I have nothing to be scared of.
‘I don’t care. I do not want to speak about that because it is always the same story. It is enough now. If you have any questions ask other people.
‘Do you know someone who has won it [the FA Cup] more than me? We judge the season afterwards and I’m quite amazed so many people judge it so early.
‘We have not given up anywhere and you will see that in the coming weeks. This club has been in a much worse position than it is today.’
Wenger had one high-profile supporter standing up for him on Twitter, Arsenal legend Ian Wright.
