Belgium have confirmed that Arsenal legend Thierry Henry will be “second assistant coach” to new manager Roberto Martinez.
The Red Devils confirmed the appointment of the former Everton manager last month, which came as a surprise to many supporters back in England.
However, his decision to appoint the iconic former Arsenal and France striker as his assistant will be even more surprising, particularly to supporters of the Gunners.
Henry recently turned down a proposition from Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, which involved quitting his job as a pundit with Sky in order to take up a coaching role in the youth set-up.
It remains to be seen whether Henry, who turned 39 last week, has joined the Belgium set-up and kept his job with Sky, but it appears to be that way for the time being.
“Thierry Henry will be the second assistant coach,” Chris Van Puyvelde, executive director of sports, said at a press conference on Friday.
Games will not be a regular like club football and the former Barcelona man will almost certainly be able to juggle the two positions.
Henry knows the Spanish language from his days with Barcelona and that could aid Martinez, although the latter is not exactly short of English either.
