Arsenal are reportedly in line to offer Mikel Merino contract of a lifetime in order to beat Barcelona to the signing of the Real Sociedad midfielder.
Merino has recently been the subject of an interest from Arsenal as they seek to bolster their midfield department ahead of the 2024/25 season.
The Sociedad midfielder is also a target for Barcelona and Aston Villa this summer. But as the 28-year-old prepares to plan his future after helping Spain win UEFA Euro 2024. And according to the Hard Tackle, the Gunners “can offer a contract of a lifetime.”
Since moving from Newcastle United to Sociedad in July 2018, Merino’s stock has increased dramatically. For his club and country, the Spaniard has become an integral player in the middle of the park. And he has established himself as one of the top players in La Liga over the past six years.
Barca have had their eye on Merino for some time. And the Blaugrana club have made acquiring the Spain international a top priority for the summer.
Since Sergio Busquets left the club last summer, the Catalan giants have had difficulty replacing him. Even if Merino won’t be a direct replacement, he could still be a valuable addition to Barcelona’s midfield.
In the meantime, it makes sense that Villa are interested in Merino. After losing Douglas Luiz, the Villans have been exploring the market for a midfielder as the summer transfer window approaches.
