Arsenal Open Talks To Sign Nico Williams

According to Footmercato, Arsenal has begun conversations about an ambitious summer move to recruit Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams.

Last summer, the Spain international sparked widespread attention, with prominent European teams such as Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona eager to sign him. However, a transfer did not occur because the forward chose to extend his contract and remain at the San Mamés Stadium.

Arsenal have become the latest team to express interest in the 22-year-old, with Footmercato reporting that the Gunners are ‘on the case’ of signing the winger this summer.

According to the French site, Arsenal’s newly hired sporting director, Andrea Berta, met with Williams’ representatives recently to examine the prospect of bringing the quick winger to the Emirates Stadium.

However, the Gunners will face stiff competition in the hunt to recruit the €200k (£166k)-per-week star. According to the source, Spanish giant Barcelona is still interested in the youngster, as is Bundesliga club Bayern Munich.

Williams signed a four-year contract extension in 2023, but it is thought to have a release clause worth roughly £48 million, which would be a steal for a player of his caliber and potential.

reinforcements on the left wing

Arsenal presently has Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, and Raheem Sterling on the left flank. Although Mikel Arteta has preferred to play Sterling on the right, the English loanee from Chelsea is also comfortable on the left.

Martinelli has occasionally been outstanding, with his greatest performances of the season coming at left flank during Bukayo Saka’s injured layoff.

Trossard, on the other hand, has one year left on his contract, and at 30, the Belgian’s form is deteriorating compared to when he originally arrived at the Emirates in January 2023.

Adding Williams to the Arsenal squad would provide Arteta a more consistent and reliable option on the left wing.

The Spaniard’s flair, pace, and ingenuity make him an ideal fit for Arteta’s fluid offensive system, which has delivered 55 goals this season, the third most in the league.

With European powerhouses such as Barcelona and Bayern Munich rumored to be interested in Williams, Arsenal may need to act quickly to clinch his signing this summer.
