Arsenal ready to break the bank to keep Ozil – Wenger

Arsene Wenger has revealed that Arsenal will have to break the bank in order to keep playmaker Mesut Ozil at the club.

The Gunners have not lifted the Premier league since ‘The Invincibles’ managed it in some style back in 2004, and the services of world class players such as Ozil are likely to be central to them making a title charge over the coming seasons.

66-year-old Wenger has put Arsenal fans slightly on edge by showing some concern over Ozil demands for the first time, but has taken a humour from the situation while maintaining that the club’s record signing is happy in London.

Wenger said, as reported the Daily Mirror: “I don’t think he needs convincing. He wants to stay here. But if you have a good bank, call me. It’s not just money.

“Arsenal can win titles of course. But that’s what we have to show. We are in a league where Man City, Man United, Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea: everybody fights and you cannot guarantee that to anybody.

“We keep that [negotiations] discreet. In due time we will come out with that. We want to keep our best players, of course. But the more I say that, the more he is in a stronger position!”

It is understood that the former Real Madrid man has insisted that he wants his £140,000 a week deal to be renewed so that he receives £200,000 a week and his current contract expires in 2018.

Ozil celebrated his 28th birthday on Saturday and gave himself a very welcomed present by netting with a thumping volley, the strike also turned out to be the winner as Arsenal beat Swansea City 3-2.

The German had the most assists last season with 19 and although he hasn’t managed to make an assist yet this campaign, he has already scored half as many goals (3) than he did in the 2015/16 season.
