Arsenal set sights on Napoli star

Arsenal have been linked with a move for Dries Mertens but are likely to face competition for the Napoli forward. Mertens has been with Napoli since 2013 but is due to fall out of contract at the end of the season and appears unlikely to sign a new deal.
Mertens has made 295 appearances during his time with Napoli across all competitions and has scored 116 goals. However, it seems his time at the Stadio San Paolo is coming to an end.
Italian reports claim the Gunners are keen on Mertens, who could be available for a cut-price fee in January if they are not prepared to wait until the end of the season.
The north London club are likely to face plenty of competition for the Belgium international’s signature and, according to Il Mattino, Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur have also registered an interest in the 32-year-old.
German giants Borussia Dortmund have also been linked with the forward in the past and could be tempted to make their move in January.
Mertens could have options to remain in Italy as Serie A champions Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan have also been mentioned as potential suitors.
The Gunners are keen to bring in some new faces in January after a disappointing start to the season.
It looks as if attacking reinforcements are a priority as Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha and Ajax winger Quincy Promes have also been linked with Arsenal.
Promes, Zaha and Mertens are all similar types of players and Arsenal are only likely to sign one of those three reported targets if they do opt to splash out when the winter window opens.
