Arteta Demands Stronger Measures Against Referee Abuse In Football

Mikel Arteta claimed sport must “kick out” the insults directed at officials after Michael Oliver was attacked during Arsenal’s victory against Wolves.

Oliver faced internet insults, including death threats against his family, after showing a red card to Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly at Molineux on Saturday.

The judgment, which was neither changed by VAR nor was the referee directed to assess the event on the pitchside, has since been reversed by an independent commission, ensuring that the 18-year-old will not face a ban.

Oliver sent Lewis-Skelly a straight red card for tripping Wolves’ Matt Doherty, which was regarded major foul play at the time.

It resulted in the referees’ body, Professional Games Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), described as “abhorrent abuse” directed against Oliver, who is widely considered to be one of the world’s best referees. According To Sky Sport.

“Every time I talk about this topic, regardless of whether it’s about a player, a coach, or a referee, it doesn’t matter,” Arteta stated ahead of his team’s Champions League encounter against Girona.

“We need to work harder to eliminate this aspect of the game that brings nothing but terrible things, leaves a sour taste, and makes people’s life more difficult. Let’s get it out and kick it.

“We’re here to win the game and in order to do that, we’re going to have to be better than them,” said Arteta. “They’re a really good side, if you look at the games they’ve played in the Champions League against top opposition, they’ve made life very difficult for them. So tomorrow, it’ll be a very strong team in order to achieve what we want to do because the qualifying at the moment is uncertain.”
