Mikel Arteta has issued an update regarding Martin Odegaard’s return ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League matchup with Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.
While on international duty, the Norwegian suffered injury to his ankle ligament, which has kept him out since September. However, he has returned to light training for a few weeks now and is getting closer to rejoining the rest of the team.
According to Football London, Arteta stated that the 25-year-old is undoubtedly out for Saturday’s game, despite his best efforts to get in time for Newcastle.
However, there was greater hope that Odegaard would make it in time for Wednesday’s Champions League encounter against Inter Milan.
“Now is the stage when he’s going to start to do certain work with us,” Arteta said. “Let’s see if he deals with pain if physically he’s able to compete.
“With the work he’s put in I would be surprised if when he’s back training with us we don’t say he’s ready.”
There was good news for Gabriel as well. After being substituted during last Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool, the Brazilian was unable to play in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup match against Preston North End.

The 26-year-old’s injury was not as severe as initially thought, Arteta said earlier this week. And he now believes he has a decent chance of returning against the Magpies.
“Yes it’s good news,” the Spaniard said. “We have a training session today. If he’s able to do that he’ll be in the squad.”
