Arteta ‘Trying To be Too Clever’ Over Arsenal Goalkeeper Stance

Former Crystal Palace owner, Simon Jordan has questioned Mikel Arteta’s position on goalkeeping stance at Arsenal. This came after the Spaniard claimed he was open to the notion of replacing goalkeepers mid-game.

Aaron Ramsdale, Arsenal first choice between the sticks last season, continued to start there in this campaign. However, summer acquisition David Raya replaced the England international for Sunday’s victory at Everton, which resulted in a 1-0 victory and a clean sheet.

Arteta discussed the necessity for flexibility after the game. He even said he had previously thought of substituting the goalkeeper midway through. TalkSPORT pundit, Jordan wasn’t persuaded despite acknowledging that the goalkeeper’s job has altered substantially in recent years.

Changes to the starting goalkeeper without the replacement making a clear error is one thing. But discussing adjustments made in the middle of a game is quite another. At least, that’s how Jordan felt after evaluating Arteta’s remarks on talkSPORT.

“It feels like a bit of innovation for innovation’s sake,” Jordan said. “It feels like Arteta is making sure that everyone thinks he’s a clever, innovative manager that isn’t just following in the footsteps of Pep Guardiola.

“I don’t understand the context of this interview and the structure of why he said it and what benefit this wisdom gives us,” he added. Before stressing his belief that goalkeeper and outfielders are “very different” players.

“I’m obviously not against the idea of it if there’s good reasons for it, like a set of circumstances where there are specific skillsets that one goalkeeper has over another,” he said.
