Manchester City left the San Siro content with a point after ending with 10-men and Kyle Walker in goal. The Premier League side made a superb start as Raheem Sterling fired them ahead on seven minutes but they couldn’t add to their tally, with Gabriel Jesus missing from the penalty spot in the first half.
Goalkeeper Ederson went off at the interval and disaster struck for City nine minutes from the end when replacement Claudio Bravo was given a straight red card.
By that stage Mario Pasalic had drawn Atalanta on terms, as Pep Guardiola was forced to call on England left-back Walker to don the gloves.
To his credit, Walker kept a free-kick from Alejandro Gomez out with his first action, albeit he needed two attempts to gather; and the Italians could not trouble him in the time that remained.
A six-goal thriller in Zagreb, where both Dinamo and Shakhtar Donetsk also ended with ten men in their 3-3 draw, ensures that Man City remain firmly in control of Group C, despite allowing Atalanta grab their maiden Champions League group stage point.
Victory over Shakhtar in Manchester on November 26th will see City into the last-16 as group winners with a game to spare, while a point will be enough to ensure safe passage.
Guardiola and City could have been forgiven for briefly thinking their visit to the San Siro was going to be a straightforward assignment when Sterling scored early on.
David Silva and Jesus were involved in the build-up with some superb intricate one-touch passing and Sterling was there to convert inside the box.
That goal arrived just moments after Timothy Castagne and Hans Hateboer had almost combined to give the Italians a lead, and the City counter appeared to take the stuffing from Atalanta for a while.
Riyad Mahrez and Kevin De Bruyne were enjoying City’s domination of the ball but they failed to add goals. Six minutes before the break and Sterling was tripped inside the box and City had a penalty, but Jesus saw his weak shot drag well wide of the upright.
It would come back to haunt City shortly after the interval.
Gomez made ground on their left and his teasing cross was met with a bullet header by Pasalic that flew past the recently-arrived Bravo in City’s goal.
The goalkeeper had to leave his line to head clear after hesitation from Nicolas Otamendi not long after while Bravo was then at full stretch to deny Berat Djimsiti’s header across goal just beyond the hour-mark.
Having got to Josip Ilicic with that earlier headed clearance, Bravo could only bring the forward down when he raced off his line on 81 minutes and, despite a VAR review, the replacement goalkeeper was given his marching orders.
Walker, after a lengthy delay while the fourth official’s board was malfunctioning, went between the posts and did well to make his one save from Gomez’s powerful low free-kick.
Atalanta couldn’t work Walker in the closing stages, despite seven minutes of added time, though the make-shift stopper did come off his line to catch a dangerous cross from Gomez in commanding fashion during stoppage time.
