Atletico Madrid have beaten title winners from six different nations in the Champions League this season.
Atletico have beaten the following national champions this season:
Benfica
Galatasaray
Astana
PSV
Barcelona
Bayern
Diego Simeone’s side reached the final of the elite European competition on Tuesday night, following an aggregate win over Bayern Munich on the away goals rule.
Heading into the second leg with a 1-0 lead, Atleti conceded a Xabi Alonso free-kick in the first half.
Antoine Griezmann then levelled the scoreline on the night, and put Atleti in the lead on aggregate, before Robert Lewandowski pulled a goal back for Bayern.
The Poland international’s strike ensured the tie finished 2-2, but Griezmann’s effort proved to be the key moment of the semi-final as it was the only away goal from either side.
The German giants became the sixth domestic champions of 2014/15 to be defeated by Los Rojiblancos this term.
Galatasaray (Turkey), Astana (Kazakhstan) and Benfica (Portugal) were all beaten in the group stage, before Atleti prevailed past PSV Eindhoven (Holland) in a Round of 16 penalty shoot-out.
In the quarter-finals, the reigning champions of their own country, Barcelona, were eliminated by Simeone’s men for the second time in three seasons.
Atleti will now face either Manchester City or local rivals Real Madrid in the final.
