Ferran Torres was acquired by Barcelona in the January 2022 winter transfer window for a sum of €55m. He initially had a successful beginning to his career at the Catalan club, but a lot has changed since then.
Ferran Torres’ form has particularly deteriorated since the World Cup in Qatar, as he struggled for form for the rest of the competition despite scoring twice for Spain against Costa Rica in the tournament opener.
This poor form persisted since his return to Barcelona for club duties. He has only started two games, both in the Copa del Rey matches against Intercity and Ceuta. .
And even in those games, Torres was unable to get Xavi’s attention in any significant way, which would have given him more playing time.
The situation worsened when he came on as a replacement in the Liga match against Atletico Madrid, where he was dismissed for fighting Savic. Since that time, he has only gotten around 5 minutes to close the matches against Sevilla and Betis.
The change in Xavi’s system has also not helped Torres, as the team has shifted from a three at the front to a 4 in the midfield system.
Still, SPORT reports that Xavi has faith in his potential, and is willing to give him some game time in the coming weeks.

This is in line with Xavi’s approach to other fringe players like Raphinha and Kessie, who have got significant game time in recent matches.
Recovering Torres’ form should also be high on Xavi’s agenda, as he can come in handy in the upcoming tight schedule, and any hope of cutting the losses with Torres’ will also rest on how well he can perform on the pitch.
