Barcelona secured their long-term future in Catalonia by negotiating mostly with their current players during the January transfer window.
Due in significant part to a financial crunch and an exorbitant salary bill that continued to strain Barça’s balance sheet, the club decided against investing in any huge stars.
According to Diario SPORT that Barcelona did not have no other options when it came to the new hires.
The club was actually given the opportunity to bolster the team by signing Virgil van Dijk and Joshua Kimmich.

Given that their contracts with Liverpool and Bayern Munich, respectively, expire at the end of the current campaign, both players have been offered to Barcelona.
However, the report affirms that Deco, the sports director of Barcelona, turned down the chance to recruit Kimmich and van Dijk.
Deco made this decision because they want to spend more money on younger players and are no longer interested in signing older players, even if they are less expensive.
Even though Barcelona still think highly of Kimmich, it seems the Germany international doesn’t exactly fit the club’s profit criteria.
Barca are concentrating on a more defensive pivot position if they decide to buy a midfield player.
Regarding Van Dijk, it should be mentioned that Barcelona already have a strong defensive lineup, which will only get stronger if Jonathan Tah signs as a free agent.
It wouldn’t have made much sense to sign van Dijk next summer, especially as Tah is already joining on a free transfer.
