Barcelona Expecting Unexpected Windfall From Transfer Drama In Italy

According to a recent Mundo Deportivo story, Estanis Pedrola, who made his senior debut for Barcelona during the 2021-22 season, is set to make a big move to Italy.

This development is anticipated to be made official soon, perhaps as early as today. Despite minimal game time at Sampdoria in Serie B, Pedrola is expected to join Bologna, which is now seventh in Serie A.

The loan agreement includes the option for Bologna to purchase the player at the end of the season.

What does Barcelona stand to gain?

Barcelona is keeping a careful eye on this agreement because of financial ties to Pedrola’s career path. When the Catalan club first sold him to Sampdoria, they prudently preserved 50% of the rights to any future sales.

This strategic decision could pay off if the player performs well in Bologna. So far, Barcelona has secured €3 million from Sampdoria, subject on Pedrola playing 10 games during his loan spell in the 2023-24 season.

The original loan agreement with Sampdoria in the summer of 2023 included a stipulation forcing the Italian club to pay €3 million if Pedrola played 10 matches, which resulted in Sampdoria’s outright acquisition of the player.

However, Barcelona kept a €7 million buyback option that can be exercised until 2025. They also preserved 50% of any future transfer fees.

The move to Bologna includes a clear buy option, which means that if the Italian side decides to sign Pedrola permanently, Barcelona will benefit financially.

The club’s choice to keep a buyback clause and a sizable portion of any future sale demonstrates their conviction in Pedrola’s potential and desire to remain involved in his development.

If Pedrola thrives in Bologna,  it could open up multiple possibilities for all parties involved.
