Barcelona midfielder Oriol Romeu had only a year remaining on his contract and was set to depart the team this summer following a dismal second half of last season.
Nevertheless, it appears that he will stay with the team despite Serie A’s interest.

Romeu is reportedly aware of interest from a Serie A team, according to MD, but Girona was unwilling to satisfy Barcelona’s demands for him.
Girona was interested in sending him back to Montilivi. It’s quite likely, they say, that Napoli is that side.
But Romeu has made the decision to remain at his childhood club after learning that new boss Hansi Flick will be employing him in the next campaign. A problem is that Napoli isn’t even a player in Europe, reports Football Espana
The 33-year-old had a strong start for Barcelona, but when the team adopted a less possession-heavy strategy, he found it difficult to make an impact and eventually lost his spot in the starting lineup under Xavi Hernandez.
Flick seems to be going for a more straightforward look as well, although Romeu seems content with what he’s seen so far.
Romeu started his playing career with Barcelona, mostly with Barcelona B, their reserves.
He spent time on loan at Valencia and VfB Stuttgart after joining Chelsea in 2011 for a reported €5 million.
Four years later, he moved to Southampton. After making 256 appearances for Southampton, he joined Girona in La Liga in 2022.
Romeu participated in Spain’s under-17 squad that won the 2008 European Championship and represented his country up to the under-21 level. He participated in the 2012 Olympics as a player for his nation.
