Barcelona Missed Out On Generational Talent Last Summer Because Of FFP Restrictions

Barcelona search of reinforcements last summer was greeted with various financial barriers, and one of the players who slipped past their grasp was Stade Rennes’ highly-rated talent, Desire Doue, who now plays for Paris Saint-Germain.

According to reports from SPORT, after failing to seal the acquisition of Nico Williams, Barcelona’s sporting director Deco promptly shifted his eye to the young French wonder.

However, just like with Nico, the club’s ongoing struggles with Financial Fair Play regulations meant they were unable to proceed with a concrete offer.

Deco had Desire Doue in mind.

Deco had heard great reports on Doue, describing him as a player who would fit well into Barcelona’s tactical framework. The teenager, noted for his left-footed dominance, has exceptional dribbling skills, quickness, and attacking flair.

His explosiveness and unpredictability make him a constant threat in the final third, attributes that Barcelona has long valued in their wingers.

These characteristics also explain why a coach like Luis Enrique, who has a strong connection to Barcelona’s football philosophy, has been able to get the most out of him at PSG this season.

An ideal player  has to have

From a sports standpoint, Barcelona’s management considered Doue as a player who could have considerably improved their roster, particularly under new head coach Hansi Flick.

However, with no financial resources to make a bid, the Catalan club had to withdraw from the contest, leaving the door wide open for Paris Saint-Germain.

In mid-August, the French giants paid €50 million for Doue, knocking out Bayern Munich, who were also interested in signing him.

If Barcelona had been able to bargain, they may have purchased the player at a lower cost and with more flexible payment conditions.
