Barcelona was supposed to return to the newly renovated Camp Nou in November 2024 to commemorate the club’s 125th anniversary, but three months later, there is still no word on when that will happen. The club and president have consistently promised that the return would happen this season, but that now appears to be out of reach as well.
After initially putting the return date out to February, it has been claimed in recent months that the Blaugrana were eager to leave Montjuic before the conclusion of the season, allowing them to host the last few games of the season at Camp Nou. The Clasico match with Real Madrid was scheduled for the weekend of May 11th. It would allow Barcelona to boost their hosting capacity to 60,000 and make a major difference in terms of income.
However, Sport reports that Barcelona has given up hope of hosting games at Camp Nou this season. As construction company Limak works to install the third deck, it remains unclear whether they will be able to return to Camp Nou at the start of the next season. They further state that Barcelona has subcontracted the construction of their VIP boxes and director’s area to local enterprises rather than Limak.
Work on the third tier is incompatible with hosting games, and Barcelona wants the structure completed before next season so that they may install the roof in the summer of 2026. Finally, the transfer will have a huge financial impact on the team, as the season’s budget is based on a significant increase in stadium revenue this season.
