Barcelona midfielder, Frenkie de Jong is reportedly playing with caution in order to avoid another heart-breaking injury and surgery as he has been battling an ongoing ankle injury.
A new report from Esport3 via Barca Universal claims that De Jong has been playing conservatively since he is aware that he might need surgery if the same area sustains any more injury.
This anxiety is a result of the fact that surgery will be required if he injures the exact same area for a fourth time, which has naturally been on his mind.
It has taken the 27-year-old a long time to return to full fitness. He returned to the field last month after missing over six months of action.
Due to his extended absence, he was unable to participate in the most of the Euro 2024 qualifying matches and the final tournament in Germany, where England defeated the Netherlands in the semifinals.
De Jong has frequently questioned whether he will ever be able to regain his peak performance during his recuperation. He always maintained the hope that he might one day be able to play football again, though, in spite of his reservations.
He suffered another injury to his leg during a recent La Liga game against Real Sociedad, which alarmed both team officials and supporters.

Luckily, the midfield player provided some reassurance by confirming that the injury had nothing to do with his ankle or knee.
De Jong will hope he is fit than ever when club football returns after the international break. Barcelona are set for a trip to Celta Vigo after which they will host Brest and Las Palmas in the UEFA Champions League and the Laliga respectively.
