Barcelona Star Says He Won’t Return To Club While Xavi IsThe Manager

A Barcelona exile has declared that he will not return to the team as manager under Xavi.

This season, Barcelona’s comeback under Xavi has stalled a bit, and the defending La Liga champions are currently eight points behind the leaders in the standings.

The former Barcelona and Spain midfielder experienced yet another blow on Sunday as Real Madrid defeated them 4-1 in the Spanish Super Cup final. As a result, the pressure is not really building at Camp Nou.

The 43-year-old deserves a lot of praise for his contributions to the team, particularly in light of the dire circumstances both on and off the field that Barcelona was in when he joined in 2021. Even so, not every person associated with the club is a huge fan of his.

When Sergino Dest joined Barca from Ajax in 2020, he was one of the most promising young talents available; the Catalan team agreed to a transaction costing up to £23.8 million and awarded the 19-year-old a contract with a €400 million buy-out clause.

Dest, though, lost ground after first exhibiting promise, and under Xavi, his circumstances only got worse the previous season. The right-back went on loan to PSV Eindhoven last summer in an attempt to jumpstart his career, and he has since helped the Eredivisie team win all 17 of their games.

The USMNT player, who made an impression in the Netherlands, has said that he will not be going back to Barcelona as long as Xavi is the coach.

Dest said to VI, in response to a question about returning to Camp Nou: “Only if  the situation changes there. Xavi is still there now. So at the moment no, that will be too difficult.”

Dest could well be available for transfer in the summer, as could two other Barcelona stars. According to reports, Xavi would be willing to let one of Ilkay Gundogan or Frenkie de Jong go to raise funds to sign another deep-lying midfielder.
