Gavi is expected to miss a significant amount of games after suffering a full tear of his ACL and a meniscus injury, according to Barcelona.
After suffering an awkward knee twist 26 minutes into Spain’s 3-1 victory over Georgia in their final Euro 2024 qualifying match on Sunday, Gavi was taken off the field in tears.
According to 90 min, Ferran Torres dedicated his goal in the second half to his teammate, both club and country, despite initial reports indicating that the midfielder’s injury was “major.”
The Young lad returned to Barcelona after leaving the Spain camp to have scans and tests done on the injury; the club disclosed the concerning extent of the injury on Monday.
“Tests carried out on Monday morning on the first team player Gavi have shown that he has a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and an associated injury to the lateral meniscus. The player will have surgery in the coming days after which a new medical update will be released,” Barcelona said in a statement.
Barcelona invited fans to send love and support messages to their beloved Gavi as they concluded their statement.
“The Andalusian midfielder is a firm favourite amongst the fans. Gavi’s spirit and determination on the field are what defines him as a player and he gives absolutely everything in a Barca shirt. For that reason his injury is a big blow for all Barca fans and so here is a chance to send him a message of support,” they added.
The news is an enormous setback to La Blaugrana, who are currently experiencing trouble winning back La Liga. They follow Real Madrid by two points and are four points behind Girona going into the November international break.
It’s now a race against time for Gavi to make a comeback this season and make the squad for Spain at Euro 2024 in the summer.
