According to reports in Spain, Barcelona is still convinced that they can persuade head coach Xavi to stay, and they are working on a “plan” to support their efforts.
Barca has made it obvious that they want to retain Xavi on, and they’re hopeful that the perfect conditions will cause him to reconsider. The squad has been virtually unstoppable since he announced his retirement; they have advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals and are presently riding high with an 11-game unbeaten streak.
Joan Laporta, the club president, is eager to convince Xavi to stay, but she won’t find out until the end of the campaign what the coach has decided.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Laporta thinks Xavi would reconsider leaving if the squad does well in La Liga and the Champions League. Laporta believes the coach can accomplish amazing things with the players he now has, so he is ready to be patient.
If all goes according to plan, Laporta wants to extend Xavi’s contract through 2025 and possibly 2026. They intend to bolster the squad and improve their chances of keeping the 44-year-old by adding a few new players this summer.
Xavi will not want a repeat of last summer where deals fell through because the club didn’t have the requisite funds. If there is not clear evidence the club can afford to build a great team, then he will not stay, regardless of how the rest of the season plays out.
The decision will ultimately be in the hands of the Spanish boss, but Barcelona will not back down in their fight to keep their manager.
