Bayer did ‘very well’ in Atletico win – Bosz

Bayer Leverkusen coach Peter Bosz hailed his side’s performance after they defeated Atletico Madrid 2-1 in Champions League Group D on Wednesday. The German Bundesliga outfit went into the game on the back of three consecutive defeats in the Group D, but finally got their first points on the board on Wednesday.
A Thomas Partey own goal put Die Werkself in front four minutes before half-time and Kevin Volland’s strike 10 minutes into the second half doubled their advantage.
Nadiem Amiri was sent off for the hosts in the 84th minute and Alvaro Morata set up a nervous finale when he pulled one back after three minutes of injury time.
However, Bayer held on to take the three points which move them level with Lokomotiv Moscow in the pool. “It was important to stay compact against a team like Atletico Madrid. We did very well today,” Bosz said afterwards.
Juventus remain at the top of the group on 10 points and Atletico could have joined them in the knockout stages had they won at the BayArena after the Italians defeated Lokomotiv Moscow in the night’s other match in Group D.
Bayer must now win in Moscow in their penultimate group game on November 26 to keep alive their hopes of featuring in the last-16 in the New Year.
The win could also boost the side’s Bundesliga form as they have gone four games without a win domestically and currently sit down in 10th position with 15 points from their opening 10 matches.
