On September 30, 2022, Bayern Munich defeated Bayer Leverkusen 4-0. Leverkusen immediately fired Gerardo Seaone and replaced him with Xabi Alonso. Since Alonso’s arrival, Bayern has failed to overcome Leverkusen on four separate occasions. Leverkusen also went undefeated to interrupt Bayern’s record of 11 consecutive Bundesliga titles.
While Leverkusen’s spectacular run to the Bundesliga title last season appeared to signal a shift in power dynamics, Bayern has rebounded this season and leads the table by eight points heading into the confrontation this weekend.
“Unfortunately, the gap has become far too big,” stated Leverkusen captain, Lukáš Hrádecký (via @iMiaSanMia). “The difference from last season is that we won the games we’re currently drawing last year. Unfortunately, there is an eight-point deficit.

Hrádecký said that “the way Bayern are doing at the moment, I think that anything other than a home win [next week] would mean we can almost write them off.” With a possible home win, we may be able to upset Bayern’s momentum. However, it is still challenging. We didn’t expect them to play so well.
The general public agrees with Hrádecký that with 12 matches remaining after this encounter, a five-point gap can be overcome, but anything else would require a massive meltdown on Bayern’s behalf.
