Bayern Munich Could Offer Young Talent In Swap Deal To Sign Chelsea Forward

The silence around Bayern Munich during the winter transfer window has been shattered with the announcement that they have initiated talks with Premier League club Chelsea about signing Christopher Nkunku.

According to Florian Plettenberg of SkySports, the player and Bayern have struck a full verbal agreement on a long-term contract; nonetheless, the two clubs are still haggling. A loan for the Frenchman is not a possibility because Bayern Sporting Director Max Eberl only wants to sign Nkunku on a permanent basis.

Nkunku joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023 for a cost of €60 million. In his first season with the London club, he was limited to 14 appearances due to injury. He has been healthy this season.

His playing time appears to be mostly limited to UEFA Conference League and cup matches. Bayern’s interest in the versatile forward may stem from his impressive four-year run at Leipzig, where he scored 70 goals and won two DFB Pokals.

Chelsea is interested in a swap deal with Mathys Tel.

With Nkunku’s departure, Chelsea is considering signing Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel in a swap deal. The Premier League team, like Bayern, is aiming for a permanent signing rather than a loan. So far, Mathys Tel’s camp and Bayern have agreed that the youngster should stay at Bayern and battle for regular playing time, but that might all change suddenly.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Bayern should examine signing Nkunku separately from Chelsea’s interest in Mathys Tel. Regardless of whether it is a swap deal, the two transfers will still have a significant impact on each other, because if one of them fails, either Chelsea or Bayern would not have the significant funds or vacancy in the squad to complete the other move.

It remains to be seen whether Bayern would be willing to cut ways with Mathys Tel in the middle of the season. Both the player and the organization have previously demonstrated a strong loyalty to each other, rejecting many loan offers.

This season, the 19-year-old has battled to find consistent playing time and has fared poorly off the bench. It was recently stated that Vincent Kompany had extensive, straight chats with the player, confirming his complete trust in him for the future. As a result, it would be unexpected if Tel and Bayern eventually parted ways.
