Bayern Munich equal Man United’s Champions League record despite loss

Bayern Munich may have crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday night, but they did equal a record which was set by Manchester United.

The Bavarian giants took the lead in their semi-final second leg against Atletico Madrid through Xabi Alonso’s free-kick, but Antoine Griezmann equalised after the break.

However, Robert Lewandowski pulled one back to give Bayern a 2-1 lead before Fernando Torres then missed a penalty.

Unfortunately for Bayern, the 2-2 aggregate score was enough for Atletico to go through meaning Pep Guardiola’s side have crashed out the semi-final stage for the third consecutive season.

However, there was some pride after their clash against Diego Simeone’s men, as Bayern equalled Manchester United’s record of 12 consecutive home wins in the competition.

Bayern Munich equal a Champions League record 12 consecutive home wins held by Man Utd (2006-09):

12 wins

41 goals

6 conceded

The record was set over three years for the Red Devils under Sir Alex Ferguson, a period of which they reached two Champions League finals.

The record will be little consolation to Bayern or manager Guardiola, who will now be looking to go out on a high this summer by winning the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal Cup.

The Spaniard is sure to receive some criticism in the days to come for yet another last four Champions League exit.
