After conducting a series of morning raids throughout the nation, police detained a number of suspects, including the football player.

“The investigation concerns alleged facts of importation of cocaine from South America to Europe, via the port of Antwerp and its redistribution in Belgium,” the office said in a statement.

No additional information was immediately made public.

Born in Antwerp, the 36-year-old Nainggolan came out of retirement last week to join a lower-tier Belgian team, marking the end of a lengthy career that saw him play 30 games and score six goals for the national team.

Prior to signing with Belgian second-tier team Lokeren last week, he had been without a club since last summer, having previously played for Italian sides Cagliari, Inter Milan, and Roma.

He scored his first goal in Lokeren’s 1-1 home draw against K. Lierse over the weekend, reports Nzehrald.

In the summer of 2021, he had already returned to Belgium from Italy to join Royal Antwerp.
