Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that seeing Hector Bellerin make the PFA Team of the Season should inspire Alex Iwobi who, at this stage of his career, is where the Spanish full-back was 12 months ago.
Bellerin was voted into the PFA Team of the Season by his fellows peers after a superb first full season at Arsenal.
The Spaniard came into the side when the season was a couple of months old in 2014/15 and earned a starting role in the side, but this season is when he finally came of age.
Wenger was delighted with his performance against West Bromwich Albion last night but looked at his inclusion in the PFA Team of the Year as potential inspiration for Alex Iwobi.
“He was like Iwobi last year, that means he came into the squad and continued to develop,” Wenger said to the press, via the club’s official website. “For Iwobi that’s a good way to follow, to move even a step up next season. The positive of the season is that Hector has been consistent. He was outstanding in the first half as well.”
Bellerin has made 32 appearances this season, missing just two games in the Premier League, and he has scored one goal.
One thing he’s added to his game is better delivery in the final third after assisting four goals, while he’s also toughened up in defence, winning 55% of his duels.
Iwobi has only made 10 appearances in the top flight this season but already has two goals to his name. There seems to be a lot of hype around the young talent, especially within the club, as Wenger continues to give him opportunities in the side, and he may well feature next season in the PFA Team of the Year if he follows in Bellerin’s footsteps.
