Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed he will make a decision on Filip Benkovic’s future during the January transfer window. Benkovic played under Rodgers while on loan at Celtic last season and the defender made 20 Scottish Premiership appearances as the Bhoys completed an unprecedented ‘treble-treble’.
Former Reds boss Rodgers left Parkhead for King Power Stadium on February 26, a decision that did not do down well with Celtic fans, but the Northern Irishman has enjoyed a good start to life back in England’s top flight.
Having led Leicester to a ninth-place finish last season, the 46-year-old has guided the Foxes to third place this term after nine games, two points behind Manchester City in second and a further six adrift of table-toppers Liverpool.
Jonny Evans and Caglar Soyuncu have been the preferred combination at the heart of defence this season, while Jamaican Wes Morgan has been the one to step in if a replacement is required.
Despite his good work at Celtic, Benkovic is yet to play a single minute for the senior team in any competition this season and he has had to settle for three appearances in Premier League 2 Division One.
Reports are now suggesting the defender could go out on loan in January and Rodgers has confirmed he will make a decision on the Croatia international’s future at the turn of the year. “He’s been good,” he told Leicestershire Live. “He played away at Tottenham with the Under-23s (last week). He’ll play in some more of their games. For Filip, it’s a very difficult position for him. He’s fighting every day to be fitter and stronger. “We’ll see where he’s at in January, whether he needs games with more pressure, or whether he stays and is that support player should anything happen.”
Early reports are suggesting Scottish champions Celtic are interesting in re-signing Benkovic on loan in January as they look to bolster their squad for the second half of the campaign.
