Real Madrid and France forward Karim Benzema has been hit by a fresh scandal on Thursday evening, with French outlet Liberation reporting that he has been called as a witness in a drug trafficking case.
Benzema was placed under investigation and dropped from the French national team after he was reported to be complicit in an attempt to blackmail international team-mate Mathieu Valbuena over a sex-tape.
The sanctions on him have now been lifted to the extent where he can play for France, although Didier Deschamps has resisted calling him up to his latest squad, but he is still under investigation.
Now Liberation are reporting on a new court case, saying that Benzema was a witness during a court case involving drug trafficking, money laundering and gang laundering back in September.
It’s worth reiterating that the report is that Benzema was just a witness, nothing more than that, but nevertheless it still doesn’t look good for the forward in a year full of negative PR for him.
There’s a quote from Benzema’s lawyer which says “Karim has been wronged. He lost a lot of money.”
The full scoop from Liberation will not be released until tomorrow so until then we’re left to wait to see what the full story is but it doesn’t look good for Benzema’s Euro 2016 hopes, which were already pretty slim as it is.
