Blades star Baldock reveals international dilemma

George Baldock intends to work as hard as Dean Henderson to gain international recognition but admits he could represent both England and Greece. Senior international caps seemed a long way off when, in April, Baldock first revealed that he qualifies to represent the Euro 2004 winners through a grandparent.
But just over a quarter of the way through his first ever campaign in the top flight, Baldock is being talked about as a possible for Gareth Southgate’s England set-up after some very impressive early-term displays.
He made a flying start to the season in August by helping the Blades keep a clean sheet in the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace and then assisted his side’s goal in the 2-1 defeat to Leicester City a week later.
And his marauding display against Liverpool, in front of the watching Southgate, last month really ramped up talk he could be a future England cap.
The ex-MK Dons player had just been relegated from the Championship when the Blades boss offered him another crack at second-tier football and Wilder has not been surprised by the talk of caps for Baldock. “I think George Baldock has been brilliant, outstanding,” the United manager said. “We’ve all had to raise our games. And he has. Some have adapted really well, and been comfortable at this level. He’s done that. He’s getting rewards now, in terms of the hard work, with where he started with his journey.”
Baldock won’t be getting carried away by the talk of England or Greece caps, admitting although “it would be proud moment either way if it happened” he was remaining focused “on doing best for Sheffield United”.
Teammate Henderson was called-up by Southgate this month and Baldock, who reaffirmed his commitment to the club after putting pen-to-paper on a new three-year contract at Bramall Lane in the summer, is aware of how much work lies ahead of him. “I see how hard [Henderson] works and am delighted to see him called up by England. Hopefully, it is many more for him.”
