Bonucci backs De Ligt to become world’s best defender

Juventus star Leonardo Bonucci has backed team-mate Matthijs de Ligt to overcome his tough start in Turin and develop into the best defender in the world. Netherlands international De Ligt led Ajax to the Eredivisie title and Champions League semi-finals last season, an incredible achievement for a player that is still only 20-years-old, and his performances earnt him a move to Italian giants Juventus this summer.
The Old Lady splashed out an initial 75million euros to sign the centre-back, who put pen-to-paper on a five-year contract, and great things were expected from the talented defender from the off.
However, following Giorgio Chiellini’s injury, De Ligt has found life tough with the reigning Serie A champions, making some costly errors during his six league appearances, and there are worries too much may have been expected from the defender upon his arrival.
Bonucci, who is regarded as one of the greatest defenders in world football, has given his backing to his new team-mate, adamant the Dutchman will be able to overcome his issues and become one of the leading players for many years to come. “Wearing this shirt puts pressure on you, and he’s doing it at just 20 years old, defending zonally after having spent his entire career marking man-to-man. It’s only a matter of time. Even against Lokomotiv Moscow, he had a very good game,” he was quoted as saying by Football Italia. “He’s only human, too. But, with experience, he will become the best defender in the world.”
Juventus, who scored two late goals to beat Lokomotiv Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday, are back in action on Saturday when they make the trip to the Stadio Via del Mare to take on Lecce.
