Newcastle manager Steve Bruce says he has no plans in place to bring in any new faces during the January transfer window. The club will make funds available to Bruce in January and it is understood he will hold talks with head of recruitment Steve Nickson in the coming weeks about the possibility of strengthening his squad.
However, Bruce feels it could be tough to bring in players who can make an immediate impact and there is a real possibility there won’t be any new arrivals at St James’ Park during the winter window. “I’ve always found January a difficult market,” he said. “Can you get what you really want? I think that’s key, especially in the transfer market. Can you get what you really want? If you can’t, have the balls to say no.”
Newcastle were active in the summer market as they paid a club-record fee of £40million to snare striker Joelinton from Hoffenheim and Allan Saint-Maximin was brought in from Nice.
Bruce’s focus in the next few weeks could well be working on new deals for some of his current players and the club have held talks with Sean Longstaff.
Longstaff’s brother Matty, 19, is also in line for a new contract after a goalscoring Premier League debut in the 1-0 win over Manchester United last time out and Newcastle are believed to be keen to tie him down to a five-year deal.
The likes of keeper Martin Dubravka, winger Matt Ritchie and midfielder pair Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey are also in line for new deals with Newcastle in the coming weeks if the club can agree terms with them.
Shelvey, Ritchie and Hayden are all currently under contract until 2021, while Dubravka and Sean Longstaff are tied down until 2022.
