Since joining Manchester United in 2020, Bruno Fernandes has established himself as one of the club’s most influential players, but he has also become one of the Premier League’s most divisive individuals.
Despite considerable criticism for his poor body language at difficult occasions, Fernandes, 29, was Erik ten Hag’s top option to replace Harry Maguire as the club’s new captain.

Bust-up in the dressing room?
Manchester United have had a difficult start to the season, so it’s not surprising that emotions were running high in the aftermath of their defeat to Brighton.
According to reports, Fernandes ‘confronted’ Scott McTominay after the final whistle at the weekend, however it’s unclear what the dispute between the two was. Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez were also at odds.
Fernandes has never been shy about voicing his displeasure with teammates, and he now has the opportunity to do so as the club’s new captain.
Teammate’s fury made clear?
Given Fernandes’ willingness to express himself, it’s no wonder that some of his Manchester United teammates have retaliated in the past.
Fernandes was irritated by Jadon Sancho during the 1-0 win against Aston Villa in May, when the attacker was seen ordering his captain to “stop moaning” during the first half.

Even during his time at Sporting Lisbon, Fernandes was not afraid to make his feelings clear if he felt his teammates weren’t pulling their weight.
Portuguese publication Record shared a leaked WhatsApp voice note of Fernandes questioning the attitude of his colleagues, underlining how much the midfielder expects of his teammates and the standards he holds them to.
Fernandes is quoted as saying: “Bro, I don’t say anything! Honestly, if you want me to tell you, I’d rather not comment on anything. I think very badly of some of the attitudes of some players. Actually not a certain attitude, it’s an attitude that does not exist.
“There are players who have no attitude here, bro. They don’t want to be here, they don’t want to play. If they don’t want to be here then f*** off, let them say they don’t want to play. They spend a year here getting money, and then they f*** off, bro. S*** attitude bro, for f**** sake.”
