Bukayo Saka has taken to Instagram to apologise to Arsenal fans for his penalty miss in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with West Ham United on Sunday.
The England international had the chance to give Arsenal a 3-1 lead over West Ham early in the second half at the London Stadium , but completely blew his lines, shooting his penalty well wide of the post.
West Ham soon equalized, forcing the Gunners to settle for a point, giving title rivals Manchester City new momentum in their pursuit of the trophy.
Saka extended his apologies to Arsenal fans on social media after the game.
“Regardless of the outcome, I’ll always accept my responsibility. Apologies Gunners, I’ll do everything I can to make it right,” the 21-year-old wrote on Instagram.
Saka has scored four consecutive penalties for England since fluffing his lines at Wembley, against Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Manchester City, and Arteta made it clear that he will continue to trust the striker from the spot.
However, the Gunners coach admitted that his squad “lost purpose” and were made to pay for “huge” errors after gaining a 2-0 lead.
On Sunday, Arsenal made unwanted club history by surrendering back-to-back 2-0 leads for the first time in Premier League history, having previously done so in a four-goal thriller with Liverpool last weekend.
